A new book by feminist historian Irene Coslet titled The Real Shakespeare argues that the plays attributed to William Shakespeare were actually written by Emilia Bassano, a Tudor court poet described as a dark-skinned Jewish woman of North African descent. Coslet claims Bassano used Shakespeare as a pen name to navigate a society that silenced women and minorities, and that the man from Stratford-upon-Avon was an uneducated businessman who took credit for her work.

The book has divided academics, with most mainstream Shakespeare scholars rejecting the theory as speculative. Coslet herself admits she lacks specific evidence of how the plagiarism would have occurred.
